If you want an AI girlfriend chatbot free of limits, nothing beats Character.AI on raw numbers. Messaging is unlimited on its basic chat models, and voice calls with characters are free as well. You pay with your attention: banner ads, in-chat ads and a slow mode when it's busy.
The catch for anyone after a girlfriend is the rules. There's no relationship mode, and sexual content is banned for everyone. Romance is something you roleplay, and it stays clean.

Replika's help center says chatting will always be free, and it means it: text her whenever you want, change her look, swap outfits, all at no cost. On the free plan the relationship is set to Friend, though. Romantic partner mode, voice messages and unblurred romantic selfies all need Pro.
So it's a lovely free companion and a paid girlfriend. Decide which one you want before you judge it.

Want an AI girlfriend free of charge? Every app on this page says you can start without paying. That sentence covers everything from a real daily allowance to five messages and a paywall. So here's the honest version, from most free to least:
- Character.AI: unlimited messages and free voice calls, paid for by ads. Romance only as clean roleplay.
- Replika: free text chat with no cap mentioned, but she stays a friend until you pay.
- Nomi AI: fifty a day, each capped at 400 characters, and no card. The best mix of free and girlfriend.

What happens when you hit the limit
This is the part the landing pages skip. On Nomi AI the cap is daily, so you wait for the next day's allowance and pick up where you left off. On Kindroid the preview is a one-off: when it ends, your chats turn read-only until you subscribe. On OurDream AI and Candy AI you can't send more until you buy a plan or coins.
Character.AI never cuts you off, but when the servers are busy free users drop into a slow mode. Replika doesn't cap text chat, but romantic messages arrive blurred on the free plan.
