Nomi's app is the one I'd install first. It's on iPhone and Android, it syncs with the website, and the free plan is usable every single day. What keeps people opening it is memory: mention your sister's wedding in March and it can come up again in May. Candy AI is a web app: you use it in the browser, and once you add it to your home screen it behaves like an app. I rank it this high anyway because it does the most, with chat, pictures, voice calls and video for $3.99/mo on the yearly plan. Paying on the website also means no app store markup.

Kindroid: the most powerful app of the six
Kindroid's apps give you everything: detailed character building, group chats with up to ten characters and video calls where her animated face moves as she speaks. Just don't subscribe through them. The website sells the same Standard plan for $13.99 a month instead of $15.99, and the year for $139.99 instead of $159.99.

Replika: the most polished AI companion app
Replika has been an app first since the beginning, and it shows. The 3D avatar is the best of the group, on Pro she can appear in your room through AR, and she can call you or video chat. Text chat is free. Plans are sold only as in-app purchases, so read the plan name on the payment screen, because the store listing doesn't spell it out.

Character.AI: the best free roleplay app
Character.AI's app is free, unlimited and full of characters, with free voice calls on top. It's a roleplay app rather than a girlfriend app: you won't find a relationship setting, and anything sexual is off limits. The new lite plan costs $2.49 a week or $4.99 a month in the app and removes the banner ads.

A web app isn't a worse app. On iPhone, open the site in Safari, tap Share and pick Add to Home Screen; on Android, Chrome's menu has the same option. You get an icon that opens straight into your chats.
App store prices vs web prices
Here's something the store pages won't tell you: the same subscription can cost more inside the app. Kindroid is the clearest case. Its Standard plan is $13.99 a month on the website and $15.99 in the apps, and the yearly plan is $139.99 on the web against $159.99 in the stores. Apple and Google take a cut, and the app passes it on.
Replika sells its plans only through the stores, and the App Store page lists monthly prices of $7.99 and $14.99 without saying which tier each one is. Character.AI offers its new lite plan at $2.49 a week or $4.99 a month. Before you tap subscribe on your phone, check whether the website sells the same thing for less.
How to spot a fake AI girlfriend app
Search for any popular name in the App Store and you'll find a few apps that borrow it. Some are clones built to sell subscriptions. Three quick checks help:
- Look at the developer name under the title. Replika is published by Luka, Inc. and Character.AI by Character Technologies, Inc. If the name doesn't match the company behind the service, keep scrolling.
- Check the in-app purchase list. A long row of weekly plans at high prices is a warning sign.
- Read the age rating and the data privacy section. The romance features in every app I recommend are for adults only.
When in doubt, go to the service's own website and follow its link to the store. That lands on the real app.
Cancelling a subscription you bought in an app
If you subscribed inside an app, deleting the app doesn't cancel anything. On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. On Android, open the Play Store, tap your profile, then Payments and subscriptions. If you paid on the website, cancel in your account settings there. Nomi AI and Kindroid generally don't refund payments, so cancel before the renewal date, not after.
